Good question and the answer is a bit of a story. When I finished my degree in mechanical engineering it was at the time of the economic collapse and I found it difficult to get a job. I did apply to do the postgraduate diploma in secondary school teaching for teaching maths and science but my degree results were 1 point too low :(. So I decided to do a Masters instead as this would mean more points and more money to be a secondary school teacher. While I was doing the Masters the Goverment made massive cuts to Secondary School Teachers and increased the Secondary school teaching diploma from 1 year to 2 years in length. This just made secondary school teaching not financially worth it for my career.

I also applied to do a masters in Biomechanical Engineering but was unsuccessful, so when choosing my masters thesis (Project) I decided that renewable energy would be a good area to go into as a career and I did a project on Tidal Turbines (Underwater Wind Turbines). This enabled me to get an internship with OpenHydro a Tidal Energy company and from there I got my current job TechWorks Marine who I found out about through my internship.

So ultimately it is a venn diagram of matching up what I want to do, what I can do and what is available for me to do (Basically do what you like, do what your good at and do what you can get paid for).
